Sherryl's Readers' Forum

Dear friends, This is the place for you to share your thoughts about my books as well as your tips on writing. Please don't use this as a forum to discuss works by other authors, pro or con. There are plenty of places you can go for general book discussions. I'd like this to be a friendly place where you can get to know others who enjoy my books. Stir up a little controversy if something in a book bugged you, as long as it's done in a reasonably gentle way. Feel free to ask questions of me and each other. I'll sign on as frequently as possible to answer your questions. Okay, then...jump in anytime. Sherryl

"Dreaded Exercise"

Okay, I said the word. More than four letters, but just as obscene to many of us. I had a brief and healthy period about 20 years ago when I played tennis almost daily -- singles and doubles -- and even ran. That's probably an exaggeration. I moved faster than a walk, but I did it with daunting regularity. And I lived in a neighborhood with a great park and rode my bike through that on a regular basis, as well. Then I moved to another neighborhood. I did take long walks on the beach and continued biking, but over time pretty much gave up tennis, and jogging, and biking. And then I jammed my knee into the console of my car in an accident and did a few other things that hurt that same knee and wound up giving up anything remotely resembling exercise. Really, really bad idea. All the pounds I'd diligently lost in my 20s and kept off for 20 years started finding their way home to my hips. Now I live in this catch-22 world: I should probably have knee replacement surgery, but want to lose enough weight first so that it's truly effective and long-lasting, but hard to lose weight when you're not exercising and the bad knew precludes a lot of exercises. So, in the spirit of making small changes over time, in November I started consciously walking more. Since my knee won't allow the long walks of old, I add in lots of little short walks during my day...an extra trip down the hallway to the trash room, parking a little further away from my favorite breakfast spot, whatever. And, since I live in a high-rise condo this time of year, I climb steps. Not a lot of steps...1 1/2 floors so far, but I figure up and back down counts for something. Unfortunately, since my bad knee groans when I even walk into the stairwell, I have to go up one step at a time to favor it. Which means, according to one friend, that I will probably be lopsided with one distinctly fit side and one flabby side. I should be so lucky that there's any change that shows both BEFORE and AFTER on this one body. At any rate, for all of you who are less than fit and terrified to even say the word exercise, I highly recommend starting with these small changes. A few extra steps each day, a few extra trips up the stairs. After about six weeks of this, I actually find that I'm challenging myself each day to add a few more. And on the days when I'm convinced this is nothing and will never solve anything, I remember something my mother used to say, "It's better to stand than sit and better to walk than stand." So, start walking, everyone. And if you have any exercise stories to share, just hit reply and share them here.

Sherryl, I work as a Surgical Tech doing many Ortho cases and have about 50 knee replacements under my belt, my recommendation is get the replacement. Also the Dr. I like the best here, says to do Pregnancy Yoga. It is very low impact so even before surgery you can do it. It you do yoga twice a day you will lose weight and also be able to handle the pain with greater ease. After the surgery you will feel wonderful and be able to run up those stairs! Good luck.

Tara...Thanks for the tip about pregnancy yoga. I'll see if I can find a book or tape with instructions. Despite my knee issues, I actually get around okay. I just have to plot my exercise strategy...and my parking habits. I've refused to get a handicapped parking sticker for that reason. I figure there are plenty of people worse off than I am...and I can use little bits of "unintended" exercise. In fact, the other day when meeting a friend for lunch, none of my usual parking spots near the restaurant were vacant, so I wound up a couple of blocks away. As I got closer to the restaurant, two spots opened up. Then as I sat inside the restaurant, more spots directly in front opened up. Even though I was muttering about it, I have to say the "unintended" exercise was far better for me.

Dreaded is right! About 2 1/2 weeks ago I got a wild hair and decided to sign up for a local 5K race. I'm not a runner - I'm a big fan of walking, but running just never has been my bag. I had exactly 17 days to get ready to run 5K. That, you see, was the real key. I'm terribly goal oriented, so registering for the race - and spending the $25 to do so - was exactly what I needed to get me moving. I'm pleased to say I ran the race on Saturday (freezing cold, blustery morning) but reached my goal of jogging the whole thing - I didn't slow to walk at all! My time was 33:34 which put me in about the middle of the nearly 1,000 person pack. But the most fun part of the whole event? The fact that I had my name listed in the sports section! Me! The one with her nose always stuck in a book! Queen of the nerds! I made the sports page! So, here's my suggestion. Set a goal. Doesn't have to be a marathon, or a triathalon, or anything lofty at all. Just set a goal and go get it. Maybe it's a 15 minute walk tonight after dinner. Maybe it's a yoga class once a week. It doesn't really matter what it is, but there is definitely something motivating about actually setting a goal. Go for it! You can do it!

Kim...Congratulations on completing the race AND on meeting your goal. The mention in the sports section should keep you motivated for a while. Years ago the sports editor at my paper asked me to do an article about jogging, which was a very loose description of what I was doing at the time. I'm not sure it would have motivated anybody toward any kind of goal, but I agree with you that goals are key and attainable goals -- no matter how small -- keep you going.

Kim...Going out in that weather is dedication or insanity. As an Ohio State grad, I KNOW how cold Ohio winters can be, and though I've been in Cleveland several times to visit my goddaughter and her family, I've managed to avoid winter when wind and snow howl off the lake. Once your eyelashes start to freeze, it is way past time to be inside.
